(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar hockey team improved to 5-1 on the season after earning a two-game series sweep over the Aquinas College Saints this weekend, marking the best start in the program's history.
In Game 1 at Aquinas: The Cougars dominated the early action, scoring the only three goals of the opening period, and answered Aquinas' only goal in the second period to maintain a three goal advantage. Brett Woolcott got things started in the first period when he scored, with an assist from Brayden Goddard. Four minutes later, Ethan Lindle scored, with an assist from Matthew Cunningham, and Landen Engles sniped a shot from near the blue line to score a power play goal, with assists from JC Garbacik and Steven Miller. After a power play goal from the Saints, Bailey Ewonus scored his own power play goal, with an assist from Tommy Madden, giving the Cougars a 4-1 lead. In the third period, Aquinas scored, cutting the Cougar lead to 4-2, but Blair Krawchyk and Collin Kerchoff each scored with 11 seconds of each other to give the Cougars a 6-2 advantage. Cleary would commit a major penalty with just under six minutes to go, and the Saints would fight their way back into the game. Aquinas scored a pair of power play goals, and added a third with two seconds to play, but the lead was too much for them to overcome, as Cleary held on to win 6-5.
Vincent Parent earned the win, making 55 saves on 60 shots faced in the game, to improve to 2-1 on the season.
In Game 2 vs. Aquinas for Homecoming: Aquinas would score a pair of goals in a matter of forty seconds in the first period to take the early lead. The Cougars would settle into the game, and Zane Rydel got the offense going when he barreled towards goal and was able to poke it home, to make the score 2-1. Dylan Tammadge would tie the game moments later, when he scored off a rebounded shot from Bennett Sheppard, with an additional assist by Braeden Bzovey. Only one goal was scored in the second period, and it came on the power play, as Dylan Tammadge scored his second goal of the game, with assists from Bailey Ewonus and Tommy Madden, to give the Cougars the lead. Cleary would score an insurance goal in the third period when Braeden Bzovey scored, with assists from Bennett Sheppard and Landen Engles, to make it 4-2 in favor of the Cougars. Cleary would keep the pressure on until the end of the game to see out the victory.
Nick Meyering improved to 3-0 on the season, as he made 19 saves on 21 shots faced.
Cleary is now 5-1 overall, 3-1 in the WHAC. It is the best start through six games in school history. Cleary will have a weekend off before returning to the ice on Friday, October 24, when they host the nationally ranked Indiana Tech Warriors at 140 Ice Den. The game is set to start at 7:00 PM.
