(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars ACHA Hockey team took on WHAC conference rival and powerhouse #20 Indiana Tech University this weekend.
In Game 1 vs Indiana Tech:
Indiana Tech would waste no time showing why they are a nationally-ranked team scoring in the game's first three minutes. Cleary would respond just shortly after making it a 1-1 game. Steven Miller would skate up the left side into Indiana Tech's zone and slam it past the Warriors goalie with assists from Dylan Tammadge and Bennett Sheppard. Later in the period, the Warriors would go up 2-1 to head into the second period. Cleary came out of the first break looking to tie the game 2-2. JC Garbacik would score on a shifty move right in front of the net with assists from Wes Smith and Collin Kerchoff. Indiana Tech would not let this slide as they would go on to score three unanswered goals to end the second period. After another Indiana Tech goal just two minutes into the third period, the Cougars would find themselves with a powerplay opportunity. Dylan Tammadge would get the Cougars their third goal of the game with assists from Bennett Sheppard and Dawson Smith. The Warriors would go on to end the game with three more unanswered goals leaving it as a 9-3 final in favor of the Warriors.
Nick Meyering (2-2) would start in goal for the Cougars making 42 saves on 51 shots. Indiana Tech outshot Cleary 51-25 in this game.
In Game 2 at Indiana Tech:
Indiana Tech would once again get off to a hot start scoring the game's first two goals of the game in the first period. Cleary would get one back when Wes Smith found the back of the net for a powerplay goal. The second period proved to be a defensive battle with both teams trading shots. Indiana Tech would catch themselves in the penalty box again and Cleary capitalized. Wes Smith would score his second goal of the game with an assist from Collin Kerchoff, his second assist in the game. The game would remain tied 2-2 headed into the third period. Indiana Tech controlled the third-period scoring the go-ahead goal. Cleary looked to tie the game with an empty net and an extra man on the ice but unfortunately, the Warriors would score and leave it for a 4-2 final.
Vincent Parent (2-3) would start in goal for the Cougars and make 37 saves on 40 shots. Indiana Tech outshot Cleary 41-24 in this game.
Cleary is now 5-5 on the season and 2-2 in WHAC Conference play. They hit the rink again next weekend with a matchup against the Concordia University Cardinals. Friday night's game will be played at 140 Ice Den with puck drop set for 7:30 PM.
