(Howell, MI)-- It was a difficult weekend for the Cleary hockey team, as they were unable to find the back of the net enough times to earn the victory, as they were swept by the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils in two games.
In Game 1 at the Farmington Hills Ice Arena: The Cougars had a golden opportunity early in the game, as Ben Gledhow was skating free one on one with the goalie, but was denied as his shot hit the side pipe to keep it scoreless. Lawrence Tech capitalized on their good fortune, and scored shortly after to take a 1-0 lead. Late in the 1st period, LTU would add their second goal, this time while on a power play making the score 2-0. The Blue Devils would add their third goal of the game early in the 2nd period to take a 3-1 lead, but Gledhow would answer right back (assisted by Jonny Gardiner and Cam Thomas) just 30 seconds later to make it 3-1. LTU would score their last goal of the game in the second period, and the home team would go into the locker room leading 4-2. Right after the puck dropped in the 3rd period, Ben Gledhow intercepted a pass and swung it wide to Cam Thomas who then passed it to a streaking Wes Smith who slotted it home to narrow the deficit and make it 4-2. Unfortunately, that would be the final goal of the game, and the Cougars would lose 4-2.
Tyler Krasofsky made 25 saves in the game.
In Game 2 at the 140 Ice Den: LTU jumped on the board first just 6 minutes into the game, but Zach Perry equalized 14 seconds later (with assists from Zack Wiener and Dalton Cummings). Penalties would be the story for much of the rest of the game, as both teams accumulated over 20 minutes in the penalty box, and LTU would take advantage of their opportunities, scoring 3 power play goals on 10 total power plays, and they also found a goal while short-handed goal. Cleary was unable to take advantage of any chance they had, and they were defeated 9-1, in a game that was much closer than the score indicates.
Liam Kocur made 42 saves on 51 shots.
The losses drop Cleary's record to 5-17, 4-14 in the WHAC. Cleary will take on Eastern Michigan next weekend, with a road game on Friday, Febraury 4, and will host the Eagles on Saturday, February 5 at 140 Ice Den. Both games start at 7:30 pm.
