(Midland, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar hockey team played their final non-conference games of the season this weekend, and dropped both to the Northwood Timberwolves.
In Game 1 vs. Northwood: Jared Salminen would score the opening goal of the game, on an shot that took a deflection and got behind the goalie, to make it 1-0. Northwood would tie the game less than a minute later, and then took a 2-1 lead five minutes after that. Blair Krawchyk would tie the game on a Cleary power play, with assists from Bailey Ewonus and Bennett Sheppard with under a minute to play in the period. The Timberwolves would answer with 0:12 to play in the period, and the two teams went into the first intermission with Cleary trailing 3-2.
JC Garbacik would tie the game in the second period, and Dylan Tammadge scored a short-handed goal, with an assist from Blair Krawchyk, to take the lead for the Cougars. A second JC Garbacik goal would give Cleary a 5-3 lead with four minutes to play in the period, but a Northwood goal made it 5-4 heading into the final period of play. Northwood would tie the game within the first five minutes, and then took the lead on a power play halfway through the period. With Cleary having pulled their goalie late, Northwood would score the dagger on the empty net, and handed Cleary a 7-5 loss.
Vincent Parent would suffer the loss in goal, making 38 saves on 44 shots faced.
In Game 2 at Northwood: Northwood scored once in each of the three periods to build a 3-0 lead. Cleary would get one back when Dylan Tammadge scored to make it 3-1. Cleary would pull goalie Nick Meyering to try and narrow the gap further, but the Timberwolves took advantage of the empty net, scoring another goal, and making it 4-1.
Nick Meyering would suffer the loss in goal.
The losses drop Cleary's record to 17-5-4 overall. The Cougars will return to WHAC-tion next weekend when they take on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils in a weekend series. Cleary will host the Blue Devils on Friday, February 6 at 140 Ice Den for an 8:00 PM puck drop.
