(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar ACHA hockey team was in action for the first time this season, and handled their business over the Kent State Golden Flashes in a two-game series this weekend.
In Game 1 at Kent State: Bailey Ewonus scored his first goal as a Cougar, with assists from Tommy Madden and Blair Krawchyk to give the Cougars the early lead. After Kent St. tied the game, Collin Kerchoff scored to give the Cougars the lead once again. A Billy Simms power play goal, with an assist from Brayden Goddard extended the Cougar lead, and CU led 3-1 after the first period. Kent State would score a power play goal in the opening seconds of the second period to cut into their deficit, but the Cougars answered with another power play goal, this time from Steven Miller, with assists from JC Garbacik and Austin Bailey. A Blair Krawchyk goal gave the Cougars a 5-2 lead heading into the final twenty minutes. In the third period, Mason Blow would score the team's sixth goal before Kent State scored the game's final goal on a power play, as the Cougars would go on to win 6-3.
Nick Meyering earned the win, making 41 saves on 44 shots faced.
In Game 2 vs. Kent State: After the Golden Flashes were spotted three goals in the first period, Cleary struck twice in the opening moments of the second period to cut into the hole they had dug. Bennett Sheppard scored a power play goal, with assists from Braeden Bzovey and Bailey Ewonus for the first of the goals. Collin Kerchoff scored, with an assist from Ethan Lindle to make it 2-3 in favor of the visitors. A Kent State power play goal made it a 4-2 game, but the Cougars would storm back to tie with a pair of goals. Bailey Ewonus scored, with assists from Bennett Sheppard and JC Garbacik, and Zane Rydel scored, with assists from Dylan Tammadge and Bennett Sheppard, to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the final period. Cleary would score three straight goals to take a 7-4 lead, and control of the game. Blair Krawchyk scored , with assists from Brayden Goddard and Vincent Parent. Later in the period, Landen Engles scored, with assists from Blair Krawchyk and Dylan Tammadge, and then Tommy Madden scored a power play goal, with assists from Bennett Sheppard and Dylan Tammadge. Kent State would get one goal back, but Blair Krawchyk scored an empty net goal with two seconds remaining to give the Cougars back a three goal lead.
Vincent Parent earned the win in goal, making 32 saves on 37 shots faced. Both Bennett Sheppard and Dylan Tammadge had 3 assists in the game to go with Blair Krawchyk's 2 goals.
Cleary is now 2-0 after the opening weekend. The Cougars will open WHAC play next Friday when they travel to Dearborn to take on the UM-Dearborn Wolverines. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:00 PM.
