Women's Soccer Suffers Defeat to Rochester to Open WHAC Play

(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars women's soccer team struggled to get things going, as the visiting Rochester University Warriors gave the Cougars a defeat to open up WHAC play.
After forcing Cougar goalkeeper Tara McGrath to make a stellar diving save in the early goings, Rochester jumped on the board minutes later on a cross that ended up as a shot, and found the back of the net to make the score 1-0. Minutes later, the Warriors doubled their lead, and just six minutes after the second goal, tripled the lead on a cross that found a Warrior foot and slotted it past McGrath to make it 3-0. The Warriors would make it 4-0 on a short corner that left an attacker open at the corner of the penalty area, who fired it into the opposite end of the net. The Cougars would get on the board just two minutes later, when Sydney Huston slotted it to Elena Strauss who shot from distance. The attempt hit the goalie, but slipped out of her hands and across the goal line for Strauss' second goal of the season. The score would remain 4-1 into the halftime break.
Cleary would come out stronger in the second half, but still had difficulty breaking down the Warrior defense. Even with the momentum balancing out, the Warriors would be the team that broke through in the second half, as they scored the game's final goal to make it 5-1.
Tara McGrath made 3 saves in net while suffering the loss, dropping her season record to 0-2-0. Rochester posted 21 shots (9 on goal) to Cleary's 7 shots (3 on goal). Rochester also had the advantage on corner kicks at 4-1 in the game.
Cleary drops to 2-3, 0-1 in WHAC play, and will be back in action on Wednesday, September 28, when they host the Madonna University Crusaders at Lake Trust Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM
