(Mt. Vernon, GA)-- The Cleary Cougars continued to make their way further South, and stopped in Mount Vernon, Georgia for a pair of games against the Barons of Brewton-Parker College this afternoon.
In Game 1: Cleary struck first in the first inning, when Osheiauna Phifer singled to lead things off. After she stole second, Mia Rzepka singled to advance Phifer to third base. Kate Currie brought Phifer home after an RBI ground out. Two batters later, Susie Bielecki doubled to score Rzepka to give the Cougars an early 2-0 lead. The Barons responded, scoring all 7 of their runs in the next two innings to take a 7-2 lead. Cleary would inch back in the 4th, when Izabell Estes scored after Bielecki reached base on an error. In the 6th, Sarah Cassidy singled home Gabby Monreal to make the score 7-4. In the 7th, Kate Currie doubled to right center to score Rzepka to make it 7-5, and down to their final out and the tying run in scoring position, Mercedes Cole's pinch-hit attempt was unsuccessful and the game ended at 7-5.
Sonya Terleckyj pitched 6 innings, giving up 7 runs on hits, while striking out 9, to drop her record to 1-2. Mia Rzepka went 3/3 with 2 R, and Izzy Easton and Susie Bielecki each went 2/3.
In Game 2: Once again, Cleary struck first in the top of the 1st inning. Osheiauna Phifer led things off with a single, followed by a stolen base. After Mia Rzepka grounded out to advance the runner, Alex Pace singled up the middle to score Phifer and give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. The Barons would strike back, scoring one to tie the game in the bottom of the 1st, 4 more runs in each of the bottom of the 2nd and in the bottom of the 5th to win the game 9-1 in 5 innings.
Allison Lesonsky took the loss, after going 1.1 innings and allowing 6 runs on 6 hits. Alexis Beeson pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits. Osheiauna Phifer went 2/3 at the plate with 1 R.
Cleary will continue their trip south, as they'll next take on Florida National and Clarke in Kissimmee, Florida at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex. First pitch against FNU will take place at 12:15 PM, and first pitch against Clarke will take place at 2:30 on Friday, February 25.
