(Sylvania, OH) -- The Cleary Cougar baseball team picked up a pair of critical WHAC victories Saturday afternoon, as they swept the Lourdes Gray Wolves. It was also a historic day, as head coach Drew Maki became the winningest coach in program history.
In Game 1: After giving up a first inning home run, Cleary would respond in the top of the fourth inning with a Jake VanderHaar to RBI single that scored Brodie Mackay and Landon Kempainen. a pair of defensive miscues would allow Lords to take a 9-2 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Cleary's bats would come alive again in the top of the sixth inning, scoring eight runs to ultimately take the game by a 10-9 score.
Brody Fay was stellar in relief, throwing 2 shutout innings to earn the victory. Josh Lucier would earn his 4th save of the season to conclude the game. Brodie Mackay went three for four at the plate, with two RBI and two runs scored, while Jake VanderHaar added two hits and three RBI in the game.
In Game 2: Cleary would have an easier go in game 2, earning an 11-2 victory. Braylon Hughes went 3/4 at the plate with 2 RBI and a home run. Ryan Rose would also go 3/4 with 2 RBI and a sacrifice fly. Hector Montilla threw 5.2 innings with 2 earned runs allowed, while Darion Amico threw 3.1 innings of shutout baseball.
Cleary improves to 24-16 overall, and are now 14-8 in the WHAC. They will look to extend their win streak on Sunday for senior day as they take on the Michigan Dearborn Wolverines in a double header. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
