(Fort Wayne, IN)-- After being recognized as a 'receiving votes' team by the ACHA, the Cleary Cougar hockey team took on the 19-ranked Indiana Tech Warriors in a weekend series Friday and Saturday.
In Game 1 vs. Indiana Tech: Matthew Cunningham would get freed down the ice for a breakaway, had his shot saved, but got his own rebound and put it in the net to give the Cougars a first period lead. Avery Byron and JC Garbacik would pick up assists on the play. Still leading 1-0 in the second period, the Cougars added another, this time on a power play goal from Tommy Madden, with an assist from Bailey Ewonus, to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage. Indiana Tech would score six minutes later to make the score 2-1. The Warriors would tie the game with five minutes to go in the period, and the teams would stay deadlocked into the third period. In the third period, Bailey Ewonus scored the team's second power play goal, with assists from Dylan Tammadge and Bennett Sheppard, to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead with just over ten minutes to play in the game. Late in the game, Indiana Tech would answer to tie on a power play of their own, and the two teams would play overtime hockey. Cleary would draw a power play, but could not take advantage of the 4-on-3 opportunity, and the game remained tied at 3-3, forcing a shootout. In the shootout, Braeden Bzovey would convert in round two, and Dylan Tammadge won in round five to give the Cougars a 2-1 shootout victory.
Nick Meyering would make 21 saves in the game.
In Game 2 at Indiana Tech: What started as a reverse image of game one would be game two. Indiana Tech scored once in the first period, and scored a power play goal in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Dylan Tammadge answered with a power play goal of his own, with an assist from Bailey Ewonus, to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second period. Late in the period, Billy Simms tied the game, with an assist from Landen Engles, and just like in game one, the two teams were tied heading into the final 20 minutes of play. Indiana Tech would score in the first minute of third period action, but Blair Krawchyk tied it at 3-3, with an assist from Dylan Tammadge. Late in the game, Indiana Tech retook the lead to make it 4-3. Still trailing 4-3 but on a power play, Dylan Tammadge scored, with assists from JC Garbacik and Tommy Madden to tie the game at 4-4. After neither team scored in overtime, a shootout was required for the second straight game. In the shootout, Bailey Ewonus scored first, while Nick Meyering made saves on each of Indiana Tech's first two shooters. With a chance to win the shootout, captain Dylan Tammadge scored to give the Cougars a 2-0 shootout victory.
Nick Meyering would make 38 saves in the game, plus the two additional stops in the shootout.
Cleary is now 7-1 (5-1-2 with 2 shootout victories) on the season, 5-1 (3-1-2 with 2 shootout victories) in the WHAC.
