(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars ACHA Hockey team opened up its 2024-25 season this weekend with a pair of games against the Calvin University Knights.
In Game 1 vs Calvin:
Both teams would take some time to settle in as the new season got underway. Calvin would open the scoring with one goal in the first period. The Cougars would be shut down despite outshooting the Knights in the first period 9-6. Calvin would add two more goals in the second period and take the momentum from there. They would go on to add another two goals in the third period and shut the Cougars out.
Vincent Parent would start in goal for the Cougars and make 29 saves on 34 shots. Despite Calvin's 16 penalty minutes compared to Cleary's 14, the Cougars were unable to answer going 0-6 on the power play.
In Game 2 at Calvin:
Calvin would dominate the scoring early on scoring 4 goals in the first period. They would add 3 more on in the second period making it a 7-0 game. The Cougars would look for some momentum heading into the third period. Freshman Dylan Tammadge would get the puck and fire it to the net. Calvin's goalie would make the save, however, Tammadge would grab the rebound and shove it into the net giving the Cougars their first goal of the season. Unfortunately, this would be the only goal the Cougars would score as Calvin continued to control the game. Calvin would go on to score 2 more goals and leave it for a 9-1 final.
Nick Meyering would make 41 saves on 50 shots in his Cleary debut.
Cleary starts the season 0-2. The Cougars will return to the ice next weekend with a two-game series against Oakland University. They will host Saturday's game at 140 Ice Den. Puck drop is set for 5:00 PM.
