(Clermont, FL)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team opened up their trip to Florida with a scheduled doubleheader against the Mangos of John Melvin Christian College, but would officially only play one game on the day, as game two was called before it could reach 'complete game status'.
In Game 1: JMCC jumped all over the Cougars in the first inning, scoring four runs to take a 4-0 lead. The Mangos would add two more runs in the second inning to lead 6-0. Cleary would get on the board in the top of the fourth when Summer Smith's ground ball was misplayed by the defense, allowing two runners to score. JMCC would answer in the bottom half of the inning, regaining a 7-3 advantage. In the top of the fifth, Sierra Diegel would hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Arianna Hagen, but the rally would end two batters later with no more Cougar runs. Once again, JMCC would answer Cleary's run with a run of their own, and the Mangos led 8-3 heading into the final inning. In the seventh, Summer Smith would hit a two-out, bases loaded single to right field, scoring Paulina O'Donohue to make the score 8-4, and keeping the bases loaded. The Cougars would have a chance to keep the rally going, with the tying run up to bat, but they would ground out to end the game, with the final score 8-4.
Haley Ludwig would suffer the loss for the Cougars, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits with 2 strikeouts. Olivia DeJohn and Leah Schumann would each have 2 hits for the Cougars.
**Game 2 was called as Cleary led 22-4 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning. As a game must be played through 5 whole innings for it to be considered official, the game, and ALL OF IT'S STATISTICS do not count towards a player's/team's season totals
Cleary is 1-4 on the season, and will return to action on Monday, March 2, when they travel to Sarasota to take on the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set to begin at 12:00 PM.
