Siena Heights
(Adrian, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team hit the road to Adrian, to take on the Siena Heights Saints in a WHAC double-header Saturday afternoon.
In Game 1: Siena Heights scored once in the bottom of the first, and added another run in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, Lauren Gannon led off the inning with a single and a stolen base. After Mia Rzepka singled, Gannon was called out at home trying to score the first run of the game for the Cougars. Rzepka would steal second, and scored as Olivia DeJohn tripled. With the runner on third and one out, the Cougars were held in check, and unable to bring the tying run across home. Siena Heights would allow runners to get into scoring position, but Cleary was unable to capitalize in the seventh, and the game ended 2-1.
Haley Ludwig threw a complete game, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings of work. Cleary had four total hits, with one each coming from Lauren Gannon, Mia Rzepka, Olivia DeJohn, and Mckenzie Latshaw.
In Game 2: The Saints opened up the scoring in the top of the first with a pair of runs, and taking a 2-0 lead. Cleary would tie the game in the second inning. Summer Smith and Paulina O'Donohue both reach base with two outs to start the rally. Gabrielle Monreal and Sierra Diegel hit back to back singles to score Smith and O'Donohue, and the score would be tied 2-2. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Siena Heights would score two runs in the fifth, and five more insurance runs in the sixth to take control of the game, with the final score ending 9-2.
Halle Dargie suffered the loss for the Cougars, allowing 4 runs (2 earned), on 8 hits in 4.1 innings of work. Cleary had hits from Olivia DeJohn, Maddie Bunkoske, Gabrielle Monreal, and Sierra Diegel.
The losses drop Cleary's record to 12-20 overall, 8-8 in the WHAC. The Cougars will look to bounce back on Wednesday, April 16, when they travel to Rochester to take on the Rochester Christian Warriors in a double-header. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
