(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team returned to action Sunday afternoon with a double-header against the Lourdes University Gray Wolves at Lake Trust Stadium.
In Game 1: Lauren Gannon singled with two outs in the bottom of the third, and then stole second to get the Cougars in scoring position. Mia Rzepka singled to center field to score Gannon, and gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The lead doubled in the bottom of the fourth. After Maddie Bunkoske reached on an error, and then advanced into scoring position on a groundout, to bring up Gabrielle Monreal. Monreal singled up the middle to score Bunkoske, and Cleary led 2-0. Lourdes responded in the top of the sixth to tie the game on a pair of unearned runs. Summer Smith drew a one-out pinch-hit walk, allowing starter Mckenzie Latshaw to re-enter the game. After Gabrielle Monreal drew a walk to advance Latshaw into scoring position, Arianna Harden came threw with a single into left field that scored the go-ahead run with two outs. The Gray Wolves would get two runners on, but Jade Kupsky and the Cougar defense were able to get the three outs needed to prevent the game from being extended, with Cleary winning 3-2.
Haley Ludwig earned her fifth win of the season, allowing 2 unearned runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts in 6 innings of work. Jade Kupsky picked up her 3rd save of the season in relief. Lauren Gannon went 2/3 in the game, while Mia Rzepka, Olivia DeJohn, Maddie Bunkoske, Gabrielle Monreal, and Arianna Harden each had one hit for the Cougars.
In Game 2: Lourdes took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single to right field in the top of the fourth inning. Maddie Bunkoske doubled with one out in the bottom of the fourth to get on base. The next batter, Courtney Witten singled to center field, scoring Bunkoske and tying the game at 1-1. In the fifth inning, Laurne Gannon singled and advanced to second base, and would score on an Olivia DeJohn RBI single with two outs, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Cougars. Cleary would get three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, with Summer Smith and Sierra Diegel both getting RBI singles, and Lauren Gannon having an RBI groundout, to make the score 5-1. Cleary's defense went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, with Cleary winning 5-1.
Halle Dargie earned her fifth win of the season, allowing 1 run on 9 hits with 5 strikeouts in a complete game. Courtney Witten went 2/2 at the plate, while Lauren Gannon, Olivia DeJohn, Maddie Bunkoske, Gabrielle Monreal, Summer Smith, Arianna Harden, and Sierra Diegel each adding one hit.
Cleary improves to 12-16 overall, 8-4 within the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday, April 9, when they host the Madonna Crusaders in a WHAC double-header. First pitch of game one is set for 3:30 PM at Lake Trust Stadium.
