(Lima, OH)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team was on the road Sunday afternoon, as they took on the Racers of the University of Northwestern Ohio in a WHAC double-header.
In Game 1: The Cougars were able to score three runs to take the lead in the top of the second. After two hits and an error allowed the Cougars to load the bases, Jenna Wagenschutz scored on a passed ball, followed by a Grace MacCaughan RBI single to score Arianna Harden. A fielder's choice, followed by a Lauren Gannon RBI single gave the Cougars their third run of the inning. In the third inning, Mckenzie Latshaw and Olivia DeJohn singled with one out, and after a Jenna Wagenschutz single, Latshaw would score on a throwing error. Two batters later, Maddie Bunkoske hit her second home run of the sesaon, scoring three runs, and giving the Cougars a 7-0 lead. The Racers would score four runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning. In the fourth inning, Cleary answered with four runs of their own, to take a 10-4 lead. UNOH would get two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Cougar defense stood tall to secure the 10-6 victory.
Halle Dargie earned the win in relief, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits in 2 innings pitched. Jade Kupsky threw 2 more innings of shutout softball in relief. Lauren Gannon and Jenna Wagenschutz each had two hits to lead the Cougars.
In Game 2: After a scoreless first inning, UNOH scored two runs in the second, three in the third, and two more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, the Racers would get a hit, scoring the game's final run, and handing the Cougars the loss.
Halle Dargie suffered the loss for the Cougars, allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits in 3 innings of action. Arianna Harden and Grace MacCaughan had the two hits for the Cleary offense.
Cleary is now 8-14 overall, and 4-4 in the WHAC. Cleary will be on the road on Wednesday, April 2, to play NCAA D1 Oakland University in a non-conference matchup. First pitch of game one is set for 2:00 PM.
