Player Outlook
Although Julian will be transferring to Cleary from Texas, he will have at least one familiar face from his junior days (South Muskoka GMHL) in former teammate Erik Wafer. Coming from Hong Kong, he will definitely cover the most distance travelled to arrive at CU this fall but he’s no stranger to Michigan as he played AAA hockey in the neighboring Ontario area. In year 1, Julian wants to properly use his speed and playmaking skills to earn a key role in the lineup. Long term he is hoping the work he will put in will earn trust and he will be a big piece moving forward. As a Sports Management major, he will get a great look/insight into the many different areas surrounding the business side of sports. Through Career Services and the internship program he will have help to find what his true passions are as a professional. He’s looking to the class size and structure to help him progress as a business mind as well as finish out his degree in the best way possible.
Coach’s Thoughts
The recurring word to describe Julian when watching him on film is SPEED. He’s got plenty of it and he knows how to use it, immediately he will upgrade our penalty kill and defensive zone. The opportunity to prove himself in those key moments will be there right away and it will be his job to lose. He’s versatile in terms of playing center or on the wing but I’d like to try to get him as many looks in the middle as I can. Now that’s plenty of talk about his defensive game but I’m also excited to see what his speed will do for our forecheck, not just to get to pucks first but also to create space once he’s got the puck. He will be able to play up and down the lineup but I’d like to set him up with some skilled players so they can all benefit from each other’s strengths. On top of the upside he brings as a player, he’s got the same qualities as the rest of this class (hard work and good character) and we couldn’t be happier to have Julian.
