(Batavia, OH)-- The Cleary Cougar baseball team won their third and fourth consecutive games Saturday, as they swept the Cincinnati-Clermont Cougars over two games on day one of their weekend series.
In Game 1: Matt Torresan would score the game's opening run on a balk to give Cleary a 1-0 lead. Cincinnati-Clermont would come back in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead, but Cleary would answer with eight runs in the top of the fifth to take control of the game for good. Joey Parinello, Brice Wesley, Ryan Rose, and Matt Torresan each had RBI hits to give Cleary a 5-4 lead. Austin Vincent, Brendan Seman, and Landon Kempainen would keep the rally going with more RBI hits, while a wild pitch would score the inning's final run. Another Matt Torresan RBI single in the top of the sixth would make it 10-4. UC-Clermont would answer in the bottom half of the inning, cutting into the Cleary lead, and making it 10-7. Joey Parinello would double home Austin Gates in the top of the seventh for an insurance run, which Cleary held on to in the bottom of the inning to secure a 11-7 victory.
Hector Montilla would earn the win on the mound, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 6 strikeouts. Josh Lucier earned the save for the Cougars.
Landon Kempainen went 3/4 at the plate, while Joey Parinello, Brice Wesley, Ryan Rose, and Matt Torresan each had 2 hits for the Cougar offense.
In Game 2: Brendan Seman scored in the top of the first to give Cleary a 1-0. An Austin Vincent double would make it 2-0, while Brendan Seman followed that up with a double of his own to add another run. Landon Kempainen would chip in an RBI groundout, making it 4-0. Brodie Mackay would add an RBI single, scoring Seman, and making it 5-0 through the fourth inning. The Cougars would add another run in the top of the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice by Landon Kempainen, making it 7-0. Cincinnati-Clermont would add one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but would get no closer, as Cleary went on to win 7-1.
Ryan Lieng was stellar on the bump, allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 9 batters.
Brendan Seman went 4/5 at the plate, while Austin Vincent went 2/4 in the game.
Cleary is now 5-3 on the season, and will play another doubleheader on Sunday against Cincinnati-Clermont.
