(Ann Arbor, MI) -- The Cleary Cougars Baseball team took a short drive south to Ann Arbor, MI this afternoon to take on the Concordia University Cardinals.
In Game 1: Conner Boone got things going for the Cougars in the first inning with a double. This would later be followed up with a two-out, two-run home run by Joey Parinello to give the Cougars an early 2-0 lead. In the third, Joey Parinello drove in another Cougar run with a single to right field, making it a 3-0 ballgame. The lead wouldn't last long for the Cougars as Concordia would score five runs in the bottom half of the inning, which was highlighted by a grand slam. With the momentum shifted, the Cardinals took over the ballgame from there. They would go on to score two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth while keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard. Concordia would hold off the Cougars in the final inning and send the Cougars home with a 10-3 loss.
Hector Montilla (1-4) suffered the loss with a final stat line of 4.0 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 2 BB, and 2 SO. Joey Parinello finished 2-4 with all 3 RBIs.
In Game 2: With the first two batters of the ballgame reaching base for the Cougars, Brendan Seman would drive in the game's first run with an RBI single. Unfortunately, the Cougars would go down in order from there to end the inning and get the Cardinals out of early trouble. Concordia jumped on the board and took the lead in the second with three runs to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Another run would score for the Cardinals in the fourth, increasing their lead to 4-1. The Cougars were able to get one back in the fifth with Austin Vincent doubling and then scoring on Conner Boone's single to left field. The Cougars chipped away one more run in the sixth, scoring on a failed pick-off attempt error, however, this would be all of the scoring action for them. The Cardinals shut them down in the last three innings and would send the Cougars home with a 4-3 loss.
Haden Fisk (1-2) suffers the loss on the mound with a final stat line of 7.0 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 1 BB, and 10 SO. Conner Boone would be the only Cougar with a multi-hit game, going 2-5 with an RBI at the plate.
The Cougars drop to 16-16 overall and 6-6 in WHAC Conference play. They will look to turn things around tomorrow when they travel to Meijer Sports Complex in Rockford, MI, to take on the Aquinas College Saints. The WHAC Conference doubleheader will start at 1:00 PM.
