(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar baseball team welcomed the Aquinas Saints to Lake Trust Stadium for a double-header Tuesday afternoon, and both teams would win a game apiece.
In Game 1: After the Saints opened up the game with a pair of runs in the 1st, and another in the 2nd, Cleary would get on the scoreboard with an RBI single by Albert Gonzalez that scored Ben Cerven. That would be the game's final run, as the Cougars struggled to get the bats hot on a cold and windy day at Lake Trust Stadium.
Nate Raniszewski threw a complete game (7 innings), and allowed 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out 6. Ben Cerven reached base all three times he was at bat, but did not record an official at bat, as he drew 2 walks and 1 hit by pitch. Cleary's two hits in the game came from Albert Gonzalez and Kristian Scalf.
In Game 2: After dropping game 1, Cleary responed with seven runs to open the game. After Kristian Scalf led off the game with a triple, Ben Cerven brought him home with a triple of his own. Cerven would score on a Saints error, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Scalf would get things going again in the 3rd, after drawing a leadoff walk, Ben Cerven would bring him home with an RBI double. Billy Flohr followed that up with a double of his own, and Cerven would score. A Spencer Jamieson sacrifice fly would score Albert Gonzalez to end the scoring in the 3rd. Ben Cerven would get his 3rd RBI with a sacrifice fly that scored Marcel Garcia to make the 7-0. Aquinas would make things interesting, scoring 4 runs in the 5th and 6th, but couldn't get closer than the 7-4 scoreline.
Travis Klocek threw a no-decision, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits in 4.1 innings pitched. Noah Bowles picked up the win in relief, and Colin Brazil's scoreless 9th earned him his 5th save of the year. Ben Cerven continued to stay hot, going 2/3 with 3 RBI at the plate. Seven other Cougars registered a hit in the game.
Cleary is now 25-16, 14-9 in the WHAC. The Cougars will play a four game series in Toledo this Saturday and Sunday, as they take on the Lourdes Gray Wolves at Mercy Field. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 12 PM, and on Sunday at 1 PM.
