(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars baseball team took care of business, defeating the visiting Rochester Warriors in two games at Lake Trust Stadium Friday evening.
In Game 1: The Cougars jumped all over Rochester, scoring twelve runs in the first four innings of action to take a 12-1 lead. Ben Cerven scored the game's first run on a wild pitch, and a few batters later, Jesnel Soto cleared the bases with a 3-run RBI double to make the score 4-0. In the 2nd, Ben Cerven picked up his second hit of the game, this time bringing home Zach Agemak. A Spencer Jamieson 2-RBI single scored Cerven and Kristian Scalf. The Cougars weren't done, as Jesnel Soto picked up his 4th RBI of the game when Sam Browne scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 9-0. After Rochester scored a run in the 4th, Cleary answered with three more runs. Sam Browne singled home Caleb Buda, and Zach Agemak hit a 2-RBI single to score Spencer Jamieson and Sam Browne, giving the Cougars a 12-1 lead.
Cleary's pitching staff earned the win by committee, but it was Quinn Foster who is officially credited with the win, his second of the season. Ben Cerven and Sam Browne each had two hits for Cleary, while Jesnel Sotoled the Cougars with 4 RBI.
In Game 2: The Cougars once again jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first six runs of the game over 4 innings. A Ben Cerven double scored Kristian Scalf, and Cerven would score on a Billy Flohr RBI groundout to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Zach Agemak singled home Jesnel Soto in the 2nd, and Spencer Jamieson doubled in the 3rd to score Billy Flohr. A Marcel Garcia would score Jamieson to give Cleary a 5-0 lead. In the 4th, Billy Flohr singled to left to score Scalf, and giving the Cougars a 6-0 advantage. After Rochester scored a run, Ben Cerven hit a bomb over the left field fence to make it 7-0. Cleary's final run was scored when Zach Agemak scored on a passed ball to give the Cougars an 8-3 lead.
Jacob Savina earned his 3rd win of the season, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5 in 6.1 innings. Aiden Mindel threw 2.2 innings of shutout baseball in relief, only allowing 1 hit. Kristian Scalf, Ben Cerven, Billy Flohr, Spencer Jamieson, and Zach Agemak each had two hits to lead the Cougar offense.
Cleary is now 22-15, 11-8 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday when they make the trip to Adrian, Michigan to take on the Siena Heights Saints in a WHAC double-header. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM.
Notes: Cleary picked up its 22nd win of the season, matching their season total from 2022. Their 11th WHAC victory has surpassed the 2022 season total of 10.
