(Grand Rapids, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars baseball team made the trek to Grand Rapids, but fell in both games to the host Cornerstone Golden Eagles Tuesday afternoon.
In Game 1: A Billy Flohr solo home-run was the Cougars' only offense, as the Golden Eagles scored in the 1st, 4th, and exploded for six runs in the 6th to take game one 8-1. Cleary's bats were held in check, as they could only manage four hits in the game.
Nate Raniszewski took the loss, as he allowed 8 runs on 10 hits while striking out 2. Trey Ridgway threw 1.1 innings of shutout baseball in relief.
In Game 2: After spotting Cornerstone with five runs over the first two innings, Cleary stormed back to tie the game in the 3rd. Sam Browne, Billy Flohr, and Spencer Jamieson each drew bases loaded walks, while Albert Gonzalez had an RBI single, and Marcel Garcia added an RBI groundout. After Cornerstone retook the lead, Billy Flohr tied it again with an RBI sacrifice fly in the 4th. Spencer Jamieson scored on a wild pitch in the 6th, and Billy Flohr had his second sacrifice fly in the 6th, but the Golden Eagles scored in each of the innings prior to take the lead. After the hosts expanded their lead to 16-8, Sam Browne homered to left, followed shortly by a Spencer Jamieson RBI double, a Marcel Garcia RBI single, and an Ethan Hollister RBI double to make the score 16-12. The Golden Eagles added an insurance run, and Cleary was unable to rally any further.
Travis Klocek took the loss, allowing 9 runs (8 earned) on 10 hits in 4.1 innings. Ben Cerven, Sam Browne, Billy Flohr, Albert Gonzalez, Spencer Jamieson, and Ethan Hollister each had 2 hits apiece.
Cleary drops to 11-11 overall, 0-4 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be "on the road" this Friday and Saturday, as they take on the UM-Dearborn Wolverines at Lake Trust Stadium. Game one will begin at 1:00 PM each day.
