(Bluefield, VA)-- The Cleary Cougar baseball team played their final pair of games of their spring break trip Thursday afternoon as they took on the Bluefield Rams.
In Game 1: Andrew Piloske singled to lead off the 5th inning, and eventually scored on a passed ball to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Bluefield answered, building a 4-1 lead into the 6th inning. Cleary would cut into the lead in the 7th inning. Billy Flohr led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch (Caleb Buda would pinch run). Buda would advance on a wild pitch, and was brought home by a Andrew Piloske. Piloske scored on the next at bat, when Jesnel Soto singled to center. After Bluefield scored again in the bottom of the 7th, Billy Flohr tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run home run in the 8th, scoring Albert Gonzalez. Andrew Piloske got on base again, followed by a Jesnel Soto single, and a Kristian Scalf double scored both baserunners to give the Cougars a 7-5 lead.
Austin Prahl would pick up the save in the bottom of the 9th, throwing a perfect inning, while Travis Klocek earned the win with a two-inning outing in relief.
In Game 2: Cleary started the game on fire, as they scored three runs in the top of the 1st. Kristian Scalf reached, then stole second, followed by a Zach Agemak walk. A Ben Cerven single loaded the bases. Scalf would score on a passed ball. Agemak scored on an RBI groundout, and Cerven scored on another RBI groundout. Bluefield exploded for 13 runs over the next five innings, while Cleary was only able to score once more, and the game would end 13-4 in 7 innings.
Jacob Savina would take the loss in 1.1 innings pitched. Andrew Piloske went 2/2 with a run scored, while Caleb Buda, Ben Cerven, and Lance Wiltse each added one hit apiece.
Cleary is now 11-7 overall. The Cougars are scheduled to make their home opener on Tuesday, March 15, when they welcome the Grace Christian Tigers to Lake Trust Stadium, weather pending, at 2:00 PM.
They will open up WHAC play next Friday with a double-header at Cornerstone on Friday, March 17.
