(Rio Grande, OH)-- The Cleary Cougar baseball team only gave up two runs over two games, but each team would take one win in the day two double-header at Rio Grande.
In Game 1: Jacob Savina retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced, but the one that was successful hit a solo home run to right field to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead, and scoring the only run of the game. Cleary's offense was held in check, as they only managed one hit, coming off the bat of Marcel Garcia.
Savina pitched a complete game in the losing effort, allowing 1 run on 5 hits over 6 innings pitched, while striking out 2.
In Game 2: Kristian Scalf led off the game with a double, advanced on a wild pitch, and was brought home by an Ethan Hollister single to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. After Rio Grande tied it in the bottom of the 1st, Cleary stormed back in the 2nd to regain their advantage. Jesnel Soto got on base after getting hit by a pitch, and stole second. The next batter, Kristian Scalf, drew a walk, and Ethan Hollister once again came up big, singling home Soto for a 2-1 lead. Ben Cerven kept the momentum going with a double that scored Scalf and Hollister to make it 4-1 Cougars. In the 5th, Marcel Garcia singled, and after advancing to third on a Jesnel Soto double, was able to score on a wild pitch to score the game's final run.
Lucas Withers picked up his 2nd win of the season, allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 6 in 5 innings. Jeremy Fuchs and Colin Brazil pitched two scoreless innings to preserve the win. Cleary's offense was much more productive in game 2, as the Cougars had 13 hits. Jesnel Soto went 3/3, while Ethan Hollister, Billy Flohr,, and Marcel Garcia each had two hits apiece.
The series split keeps Cleary over .500, as they are now 6-4 overall. The team will be back in action next Saturday and Sunday, when they travel to Columbus, Indiana to take on the IUPUC Crimson Pride in a four game series. Game 1 on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
