Women's Soccer and Wolverines Battle to Exciting Draw on Senior Day
(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team honored their five seniors for Senior Day before taking on the UM-Dearborn Wolverines Saturday night at Lake Trust Stadium.
Cleary would control the game in the early goings, but it would take 26 minutes to get on the scoreboard. Ashley Stover would send in a diagonal ball towards Shayne Krystyniak, who redirected the ball towards Payton Zeh. Zeh would fire a shot from distance, beating the keeper, and giving the Cougars a 1-0 first half lead. After Cleary's goal, the game would open up, as both teams would start to generate chances. UM-Dearborn would force a turnover, and took their own shot from distance to tie the game in the 37th minute. The Wolverines would take the lead in the 43rd minute after another Cougar turnover led to a quick counterattack, and Cleary would trail 2-1 at the break.
In the second half, Cleary avoided disaster, as a foul was called against the Cougars in the 59th minute. The Wolverines would miss the net completely, giving the Cougars new life. Building the ball up the field on the resulting goal kick. Jessica Neal sent a long pass up to Shayne Krystyniak near the top of the box. Krystyniak took a touch toward the middle of the field, drawing a defender, and sent in a beautiful pass to give Chelsea Waller only the keeper to beat. Waller's shot was true, and the Cougars tied the game at 2-2. Cleary would take the lead in the 65th minute after Taylor Franco recovered a bouncing ball, turned, and fired a rocket of a shot into the back of the net, giving Cleary a 3-2 lead with 25 minutes to play. UM-Dearborn would push forward late to try and find the equalizer, and after a half clearance from the Cougars, the Wolverines took a shot from distance, and was able to get that equalizer to tie the game a 3-3. Neither team would get a fourth goal, and the game would end with a 3-3 tie.
Bella Marsh made 4 saves in the game, and now holds a 4-4-1 record. UM-Dearborn outshot the Cougar 18-15 in the game, while Cleary held a 9-7 advantage on shots on target.
The draw was Cleary's first of the season, and now gives the Cougars a 4-5-1 record overall, 0-2-1 in the WHAC. Cleary will hit the road on Wednesday, October 1, to take on the Lourdes Gray Wolves for a WHAC matchup. The game is set to begin at 4:00 PM.
