(Howell, MI)-- It was a defensive struggle in the first half, but the Cleary Cougar women's soccer team found a way to earn a 2-0 victory over the visiting Crimson Wave of Calumet College of St. Joseph.
The Cougars controlled the game in the first half, but were unable to connect in the final third as they looked for the game's opening goal. Neither team was truly dangerous, as they combined for 7 shots in the opening half, with only 3 of those combined shots resulting in a save. The score would remain 0-0 at the break.
The Cougars halftime adjustments were on point, as they were crisper in their buildup, and a goal was certainly in the making. That goal happened in the 54th minute, when Ashley Stover scored her second goal of the season, after a cross was sent into the box from Natalia Mele, to make the score 1-0. Cleary would maintain the pressure, putting multiple shots towards the goal as they looked to extend their lead. The Cougars would find that insurance goal in the 79th minute when Evalyn Cole helped break the Crimson Wave pressure with a pass down the left to the fresh legs of Taylor Franco. Franco used her speed to beat the Calumet defender, and fired a shot into the net, to make the score 2-0. Cleary's defense saw out the game without allowing another Calumet shot attempt, with the game ending with a 2-0 final score.
Bella Marsh earned her fourth win of the season in goal, and made 2 saves in the shutout victory. Cleary outshot Calumet 16-5 in the game, and forced 6 saves from the Crimson Wave goalkeeper.
The win gives Cleary a 4-3 record heading into WHAC play. The Cougars will open the conference schedule with a road matchup against the Cornerstone Golden Eagles on Saturday, September 20, in Grand Rapids. The game is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
