(Fort Wayne, IN)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team was in action for the first time this season Saturday, as they traveled to Fort Wayne to play the Saint Francis Cougars.
Saint Francis struck first, sending a through ball to get behind the Cleary backline, and took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. The deficit grew in the 19th minute, after Cleary was called for a foul in penalty area, and USF's Grace Hein converted to make the score 2-0. Cleary had their best chance to cut into the USF lead in the 28th minute, when a Saint Francis defender was called for a handball in the penalty area. Evalyn Cole stepped up to take the resulting penalty kick, but USF's goalkeeper guessed correctly, and saved the shot attempt.
In the second half, USF added an insurance goal in the 54th minute, and scored the game's dagger in the 74th minute to make the score 4-0.
Sara Mecomber suffered the loss in goal, while making 4 saves on 8 shots faced. Cleary was outshot 14-6 in the game, though all 6 Cleary shot attempts were on target.
Cleary will look to bounce back on Wednesday, August 27, when they host the Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene at Lake Trust Stadium. The game is set to begin at 5:00 PM.
