Late UNOH Goal Steals Result From Women's Soccer
(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars women's soccer team welcomed the UNOH Racers to Lake Trust Stadium Wednesday afternoon, and some late drama saw the visitors walk out with a 2-1 victory.
UNOH opened the game up in control, as they were able to get the ball wide and past the Cougar backline to create some chances. The Cougars defense withstood the early onslaught until the 15th minute, when one of the Racer crosses successfully found a teammate in the penalty area, who then slipped the ball past Cougar goalkeeper Tara McGrath to take a 1-0 lead. Though UNOH had more shots to finish the half, no more goals were scored in the first 45 minutes, and the Racers took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Some halftime adjustments allowed the Cougars to begin to take a foothold in the game, and the momentum would swing back in favor of the hosts. Felicia Moseley missed a shot just wide to start the second half. 12 minutes later, the ball found Moseley again on a throw in. She made a move and beat her defender towards to end-line before making a cross to the near post. That cross found the head of Elena Strauss, who powered the ball into the net to tie the game at 1-1. Cleary remained on the front foot for the next 25 minutes or so, but were unable to break through and find the go-ahead goal. As the game was nearing the final horn, UNOH earned back to back corner kicks. On the final corner of the game, the Racers delivered a dangerous ball into the box that bounced around before finding the back of the net with just 13 seconds to go.
Tara McGrath suffered the loss in goal, as she allowed 2 goals while making 9 saves in the game. Elena Strauss' goal now puts her season total at 4 goals, while Felicia Moseley picked up her first assist of the season. Cleary drops to 3-7 overall, 1-5 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action Saturday, October 15, when they travel to Southfield to take on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils in a WHAC matchup. Kickoff is set for 8:00 PM at Blue Devils Stadium.
