(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team welcomed the Madonna University Crusaders to Lake Trust Stadium, but saw the visitors earn the victory, as the Cougars fell 1-0 Wednesday evening.
The Crusaders were in control from the opening kick, as they were able to get a shot and draw a corner in the opening minute. Cleary's defense would hold firm, and get down the field just a minute later to draw a corner of their own, but nothing would come of the attempt. Madonna would regain control and put the pressure on the Cougar defense, forcing goalie Tara McGrath to make multiple saves. Unfortunately, the Crusaders would strike first, as they broke down the left hand side to get into the 18-yard box, and crossed a ball back to the top of the penalty area to find an open teammate, who slotted it into the net past McGrath. The Crusaders would go into the halftime break up 1-0.
In the second half, the Cougars gained more of a foothold in the game, and were able to create some dangerous half-chances utilizing the counter attack, but nothing really challenged Madonna's goalie. McGrath made multiple saves in the later minutes to keep the deficit at one goal, but the Cougars were not able to find the late equalizer.
Tara McGrath suffered the loss in goal, as she made 12 saves on 13 shots on goal. Madonna earned 8 corner kicks to Cleary's 1.
Cleary drops to 2-4-0, 0-2 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, October 1, when they take on the Cornerstone Golden Eagles in Grand Rapids. Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM.
