Dugal's Monster Day Helps Women's Basketball Win On Senior Day
(Lansing, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's basketball team finished the regular season in style, earning a 77-63 victory over the visiting Lawrence Tech Blue Devils on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
Izzy Dugal would score 11 of the first 13 Cougar points, as Cleary built a 13-6 lead. Makenna Jarratt would hit a three to make it a double-digit lead, and then Izzy Dugal kept the train rolling, as the Cougars built a 21-6 lead. LTU would claw their way back into the game, cutting the deficit to as few as six points. Evalyn Cole would hit a jumper late to give Cleary a 27-19 lead after one quarter of play.
Izzy Dugal would score the first three points of the second quarter to give the Cougars an eleven point lead, but the Blue Devils would get hot from behind the arc, coming all the way back to take a six point lead heading into the half, with Cleary trailing 39-33.
The Cougars would battle back, and after a Jess Andrew and-one, Cleary would cut the deficit to three points. Two more Jess Andrew free throws would make it a one point game, and an Izzy Dugal free throw would tie the game at 47-47. After LTU hit a three to retake the lead, Cleary would storm back to tie the game, and took the lead on another Izzy Dugal layup. A Blue Devil basket would give the visitors a temporary lead, but Jess Andrew hit a three with 0:25 left in the quarter to give the Cougars the lead, with the score 57-55.
A Samantha Hoelscher and-one would give the Cougars the lead for good, with the score 60-57, and an Evalyn Cole three ended any Blue Devil momentum in the game with 6:27 left to play. The Cougars would be relentless in the paint down the stretch, building a double-digit lead with just over 4:00 to play, and ultimately went on to win 77-63, outscoring the Blue Devils 20-8 in the final quarter.
Izzy Dugal would score a program record 35 points on 14/17 shooting, to go with 14 rebounds in the game. Samantha Hoelscher scored 15 second half points en route to her 17 points and 8 rebounds, while Jess Andrew added 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Cleary finishes the regular season 14-14 overlal, 12-10 in the WHAC, and claims the 6-seed in next week's WHAC Tournament. The Cougars will travel to Rochester Christian on Wednesday, February 25, to take on the Warriors for a 7:00 PM tip in the WHAC Quarterfinals.
