Women's Basketball Sets New Program Record for Points Allowed in Win Over Defiance
(Lansing, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's basketball team played stellar defense once again Wednesday evening, as they allowed the fewest points in program history in their 65-33 victory over the visiting Defiance College Yellow Jackets.
After giving up a pair of early Yellow Jacket baskets, Cleary would go on a run in the first quarter, finishing the first ten minutes on a 23-2 run to hold a 27-6 lead through the first quarter.
The second quarter would be much of the same, as the Cougars continued to use a balanced attack on offense, while playing stifling defense to further expand their lead. Izzy Dugal would score 16 first half points, while Makenna Jarratt went 3/3 from the floor, including 2/2 from behind the arc, in the second quarter, so give the Cougars a 48-11 lead at the half.
Cleary would slow the game down in the second half, and the two teams would each score nine points in the third quarter. Cleary would hold a 13-8 advantage in the fourth quarter, as they would go on to win 65-33.
The 33 points allowed is a program record, breaking the previous mark of 44 points allowed which had happened twice.
Izzy Dugal had a game high 16 points, all in the first half, on 7/11 shooting to go with 4 rebounds. Makenna Jarratt would had 12 points and 4 rebounds, while Jess Andrew and Samantha Hoelscher each had 9 points. Hoelscher would tie Evalyn Cole for the team lead in rebounds with 8.
The win improves Cleary's record to 9-8 overall, 7-4 in the WHAC. The Cougars will look to make it three wins in a row on Saturday, January 17, when they travel to Livonia to take on the Madonna Crusaders. The game is set to begin at 1:00 PM.
