Women's Basketball Hands Lourdes Their First Loss of the Season Heading Into Break
(Lansing, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's basketball team took a four-game win streak into their game against the visiting Lourdes Gray Wolves, and emerged with a five-game win streak, after winning a 75-69 victory Wednesday evening in Lansing.
A Samantha Hoelscher layup would start the game, but Lourdes would immediately answer, creating a back and forth game. Tied at 10-10, Lourdes would hit a three to go up three. One possession later, their lead had grown to five points. A Makenna Jarratt three pointer would narrow the Gray Wolves lead for the moment. With a minute to play in the quarter and trailing 19-15, Izzy Dugal would score a layup to make it a one possession game. After Lourdes made two free throws, Dugal would strike again, this time from behind the arc, to make the score 21-20 in favor of the visitors through ten minutes of game action.
Dugal continued to dominate the play, as she score the first points of the second quarter. After a defensive stop, Caitlyn Rayl scored to make it a three point game in favor of the Cougars. Another defensive stop would lead to a Melanin Holman three pointer, giving the Cougars a 27-21 lead. Lourdes would cut the Cleary lead to as few as two points multiple times to finish the half, but Cleary had an answer each time to keep the Gray Wolves from tying the game. Up five on their final defensive possession of the half, Lourdes would hit a three to make it a 43-41 game at the break, with Cleary leading.
Lourdes would tie the game to start the third quarter, and would then take the lead after a made three pointer. Much like the first quarter, the two teams would jockey for position, trading points and leads, but with neither team able to truly pull away from the other. With the game tied 56-56 and under a minute to play in the quarter, Samantha Hoelscher would make a layup to give the Cougars a four point lead. On the very next possession, Melanin Holman stole the ball and scored a layup, giving Cleary a 60-56 lead heading into the final ten minutes.
Samantha Hoelscher would extend the lead on Cleary's first possession, once again giving the Cougars a six-point advantage. Lourdes would score the game's next four points, but the Cougars would stop the run and answered with four unasnwered points from Izzy Dugal and Jess Andrew. After Lourdes cut the Cleary lead to 70-67, neither team would score for almost three minutes. The drought would end at the free throw line, when Izzy Dugal made both of a pair of free throws to giave Cleary a five point cushion. Melanin Holman would make one of two free throws after a defensive stop to make it a six point game once again, and though Lourdes would get fouled and make both free throws, Cleary would draw one final foul, sending Makenna Jarratt to the line. Jarratt made one free throw, which would be enough to secure the victory.
Izzy Dugal tied for a game high 24 points, to go with 13 rebounds and 3 blocks. Melanin Holman would have 14 points, 8 rebounds, 8 steals, and 7 assists, while Jess Andrew added 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists.
The win extends the Cleary win-streak to five game, a program best, and gave the previously unbeaten Lourdes Gray Wolves their first loss of the season.
Cleary is now 7-5 overall, 5-2 in the WHAC. The Cougars will return to action after the Christmas holiday with a road trip to Central Indiana to play the IU-Kokomo Cougars on Tuesday, December 30. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM.
