Women's Basketball Never Trails in Win Over Holy Cross
(Lansing, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's basketball team built a 12-0 lead and never looked back, as they won 72-60 over the visiting Holy Cross Saints Tuesday evening in Lansing.
Grace Capling opened the game with a made three pointer. After a free throw, Melanin Holman scored back to back baskets, followed by a Jess Andrew two-pointer, and then an Izzy Dugal layup to make it 12-0. The Saints would narrow the gap to 14-7 by the halfway mark of the opening quarter. Moments later, the Cougar lead had shrunk to 15-10. The lead was back to double-figures in three possessions, as Caitlyn Rayl made a free throw, followed by a Jess Andrew three, and an Izzy Dugal layup to make it 21-10. Cleary would finish the quarter strong, and held a 27-13 lead after the first quarter.
Holy Cross scored seven straight to open the second quarter, and then cut the Cougar lead to only eight points with 7:33 left in the half. Makenna Jarratt answered with a made three, and the Cleary lead was back to eleven points. Grace Capling would hit her second three pointer of the game to extend the Cleary lead once again, as the score would be 34-20 with just under six minutes left in the half. The fourteen point lead would remain until the Cougars' final possession of the half, when Samantha Hoelscher was fouled with 0:01 seconds remaining. Hoelscher would convert both from the free throw line, and Cleary led by sixteen at the break.
Holy Cross once again started the third quarter strong, scoring five unanswered points to make it an eleven point game. Jess Andrew would stop the bleeding with a made layup, and Izzy Dugal converted one possession later to make it a 46-31 game. The rest of the quarter, the two teams traded punches, with Holy Cross only getting the deficit to eleven points. Cleary would keep the Saints at bay, and led 55-39 with ten minutes to go.
Izzy Dugal would score the first points of the fourth quarter, and a Melanin Holman jumper made it a 59-39 game, the largest lead of the game. The Cougars would let the Saints hang around, as the Saints would turn up the pressure with around five minutes to play, and forced the Cougars into turnovers. The Saints would convert those turnovers into points, and made it a thirteen point game, but the Cougar lead was too much for the Saints to overcome, as Cleary went on to win their third straight game overall.
Izzy Dugal led the Cougars with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Samantha Hoelscher had another double-double, with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Jess Andrew added 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. All eight players that played in the game for Cleary scored.
Cleary, who has won three games in a row, will return to WHAC play on Saturday, December 13, when they host the Siena Heights Saints at Gannon Gymnasium. The game is set to begin at 1:00 PM.
