Women's Basketball Suffers Setback at Saint Xavier
(Chicago, IL)-- The Cleary Cougar women's basketball team held the lead after the first quarter and at halftime, but were unable to hold on as they fell to the Saint Xavier Cougars Thursday evening.
Saint Xavier built an early 10-2 lead before Izzy Dugal made a jumper, followed by a Jess Andrew three-pointer cut the SXU lead to 11-7. The teams traded punches until late in the quarter, when Grace Capling hit a three to make it 18-15 in favor of the hosts. After SXU scored with just over a minute to go, Cleary scored six unanswered, thanks to a free throw from Melanin Holman, a made three by Caitlyn Rayl, and a Melanin Holman jumper just before the buzzer to give the Cougars a 21-20 lead.
Cleary came out firing to start the second quarter, building a 29-20 lead, their largest of the game. Jess Andrew got things started with a layup, followed by a Caitlyn Rayl layup, and a Melanin Holman jumper. A Samantha Hoelscher layup ended the Cleary run with just under 7:00 to play in the half. Saint Xavier would finish the half on a 10-2 run, giving Cleary a 31-30 lead at the break.
Saint Xavier would take the lead on their second possession of the second half. After Samantha Hoelscher hit a three to re-tie the game at 34-34, Saint Xavier would go on a 8-3 run to take a 42-37 lead. After the media timeout, Izzy Dugal hit a layup to cut the deficit back to three points. Once again, the two teams traded baskets and points, but a Saint Xavier layup on their final possession of the quarter gave SXU a 48-44 lead heading into the final stanza.
A quick three pointer by SXU dug Cleary into a seven point deficit. Jess Andrew would hit a three to cut back into the Saint Xavier lead, but SXU answered with a made jumper to hault the Cleary momentum. By the midway mark of the quarter, Cleary had fallen into a double-digit deficit. An Izzy Dugal layup late would get Cleary within ten, but once again SXU answered to rebuild their own lead. A Melanin Holman jumper with 36 seconds remaining would get Cleary to within eight points, but it would be as close as the Cougars would get, as SXU held on to hand Cleary a 71-59 defeat.
Melanin Holman led Cleary with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists off the bench. Jess Andrew added 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Izzy Dugal chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds, while Samantha Hoelscher had 10 points and 9 rebounds.
The loss drops Cleary's record to 0-2 on the season. The Cougars will return to action on Monday, November 3, when they travel to Rochester Hills, Michigan to play the NCAA D1 Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The game is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM.
