Dakota Wesleyan (SD)
(Melbourne, FL)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team was back in action Tuesday morning, as they took on the Ave Maria Gyrenes and the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers at the Space Coast Games.
In Game 1 vs. Ave Maria: It was a near perfect game for pitcher Halle Dargie and the Cleary defense, as they held the Gyrenes to only two hits in the game. The lone mistake was a throwing error by Dargie as she fielded a bunt in the top of the second inning, as her throw went past first baseman Jessica Garmen and into the outfield. The speedy AMU player rounded the bases and scored the game's only run. Cleary's best chance to score was in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Jessica Garmen singled off the Gyrene pitcher with two outs, Madi Best doubled down the left field line to put both runners in scoring position. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the next batter Jenna Wagenschutz was unable to bring home a runner, and the Cougars left both runners stranded.
Halle Dargie allowed 1 unearned run on 2 hits in a complete game effort, and drops to 0-3 on the season. Cleary earned 5 hits, with one each coming from Gabrielle Monreal, Jessica Garmen, Madi Best, Jenna Wagenschutz, and Maddie Bunkoske.
In Game 2 vs. Dakota Wesleyan: Back to back two out singles, followed by a two-run double to left center got the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the second inning. The Tigers would score another on a passed ball to take a 3-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, Ashland Particka doubled with one out to put a Cougar in scoring position for the second time of the game. The next batter, Jessica Garmen, hit a deep fly ball to left field, but Particka advanced too far off the bag, and was tagged up for an inning ending double play, ending Cleary's scoring chance.
Sonya Terleckyj would suffer the loss, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits in 6 innings of work. The Cougars got hits from Kate Currie, Ashleigh Tatara, Ashland Particka, and Mia Rzepka in the game.
Cleary drops to 2-8 overall. The Cougars will enjoy an off day Wednesday before returning to action Thursday against the Southeastern University Fire in Lakeland, Florida. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM.
