Matt Santos Tabbed to Lead Cougar Wrestling
(Howell, MI)– Cleary University Senior Vice President of Campus Operations and Athletic Director Heather Bateman has announced the hiring of Matt Santos as the Cougars' new head wrestling coach.
"We are very excited to welcome Matt to the Cleary coaching family," said Bateman. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the program, with ties to the state, and more importantly, to our region. His first hand experience as a student-athlete is invaluable, and we cannot wait to see Matt take our program to new heights."
Santos wrestled at NCAA D-1 Michigan State University, and graduated with a BA in Social Science and a BA in Criminal Justice from Michigan State.
"I like that (the program) gets a fresh start. It's something that I can make my own, and put my stamp on," said Santos. "The administration and staff are very close, and show a lot of support for the wrestling program, and for my vision of where we want to go"
When describing his goals for the program, Santos did not shy away from high standards and goals. He said, ""I want my team to be a family. Once we do that, I want Cleary to take over the NAIA- to be a dominating, top team. I know that will take time, but we want to strive for greatness right from the start."
While at Michigan State, Santos went 32-43 in five seasons, highlighted by the 2019-20 season in which he was named a USA Wrestling Greco-Roman All-American after placing 7th in the 60 kg weight class at the U23 Greco-Roman championships. That same season, Santos was named the recipient of MSU's Commit Award for his commitment to the program. He was a four time state qualifier in high school at Saginaw's Swan Valley High School, capped off with an individual state championship in 2015-16.
Santos is the fourth head coach in Cleary wrestling's history. For news and updates regarding Cleary wrestling, and all Cougar athletics, go to www.clearycougars.com.
