Cougar Wrestlers Open New Year at Waynesburg Invitational
(Waynesburg, PA)-- The Cleary Cougar wrestling team got the new year started, as they made the trip to Waynesburg, Pennsylvania to participate in the Waynesburg Invitational on Saturday.
In the 133 lb. division, Keemondre Robinson went 1-2 on the day. After being defeated in his first match, he earned a pin in 3:47 over Alma's Nicholas Dawson in the first round of the consolation bracket. Unfortunately, Keemondre would be pinned himself in the consolation bracket's second round to end his day.
In the 149 lb. division, Ryan Weaver would bow out in his first match on an 8-3 decision. In the first round of the consolation bracket, Weaver would earn a 7-1 decision before ultimately being elimination in the consolation bracket's second round. Weaver went 1-2 on the day.
In the 165 lb. division, David Emch faced some very tough competition, as he would lose his opening round match on a 5-3 decision, and was pinned in his first round consolation bracket matchup to finish the day 0-2.
Finally, in the 197 lb. division, Jacob Spiess started his day with a 7-0 decision over C. Chika from Alderson Broaddus, and earned a pin in 2:10 over M. Haywood from Heidelberg. He fell in the semifinals to D. Johnson from Alderson Broaddus by a 9-7 decision to move himself to the consolation bracket. In his 4th match, Spiess advanced over A. Torress from Case Western with a 9-1 major decision to move to the 3rd place matchup, where A. Donahue from Washington & Jefferson would earn a 6-2 decision. Spiess would finish in 4th place on the day after going 3-2 on the day.
As a team, the Cougars would finish with 16.0 points to finish in 12th place overall. Cleary will be back in action on Wednesday, Januaray 12, when they head up I-96 to take on the Cornerstone Golden Eagles at 6:00 PM.
