(Lima, OH)-- The Cleary Cougar men's soccer team was in action Saturday afternoon, as they travelled to take on the UNOH Racers in a WHAC Quarterfinal matchup.
The Racers would score the game's opening goal early, as Austin Freemire was unable to keep the ball out of the net, giving UNOH a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute. Cleary would find an equalizer just five minutes later. After earning a corner kick, Oscar Clarke delivered a very dangerous ball into the box, where Simbarashe Mazarura won it in the air, and headed the ball into the net to tie the game at 1-1. The next fifteen minutes were back and forth, as both teams were creating half-chances, but unable to connect. UNOH would get a big break in the 21st minute to take the lead. Cleary's back line played their high line, and thought they had timed it perfectly, but the Racers would get behind the defense, and were able to beat Austin Freemire in the resulting chance. The calls for offisde were not heard, and the home team went up 2-1. Five minutes later, it went from bad to worse for the Cougars, when a shot from the top of the box snuck past Austin Freemire, and the Cougars found themselves in a 3-1 deficit.
Still trailing 3-1 in the second half, a cross from the right hand side took an unfortunate deflection off a Cougar defender, and went into the net to give the Racers a 4-1 lead. UNOH's fifth goal came from another close offside decision, but the flag remained down, and UNOH made the Cleary defense pay to make the score 5-1. A late header in the 84th minute by the Racers would score the final game's final goal of the game, with the game ending with a 6-1 score.
Austin Freemire made 10 saves in a losing effort. Cleary was outshot 26-4 in the game, with the Racers holding a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal. UNOH had 7 corner kicks to Cleary's 1, while the Cougars committed 12 fouls to the Racers' 10.
Cleary ends their season with a 12-7 record.
