Men's Soccer Dominates Warriors for Homecoming Win
(Howell, MI)-- After a couple early chances were given up, the Cleary Cougar men's soccer team took control of the game to route the visiting Rochester Christian Warriors 7-1 at Lake Trust Stadium Saturday evening for a Homecoming victory.
RCU would start the game strong, earning a corner kick, and forcing a nice save from Austin Freemire to keep the game scoreless in the early minutes. The Cougars then took control of the game, used some smart buildup play, and forced the Warriors to bunker down and defend. The Cougars were able to break down the defense, but it would be Atario Brown who set up the opening goal in the 17th minute. Brown would take a shot that was blocked, and fell to the feet of Callum Johnson. Johnson took the ball, beat his defender, and fired a shot into the net to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Atario Brown got his goal, as Noah Searl sent him a pass to get behind the defense. Brown placed his shot into the right netting, and the Cougars led 2-0 just 20 minutes into the game. Cleary kept the pressure on, and were able to add a third goal in the 39th minute, as Jack Heald broke through the defense and sent Niels Koert in with a through ball, where Koert scored to make it 3-0 late in the first half.
After a foul was called against the Cougars in a dangerous area, Rochester Christian had a moment of brilliance, as they converted their free kick attempt from just outside the box into a goal, cutting into the Cougar lead, and making it 3-1. Cleary responded with another goal in the 58th minute, as Atario Brown got by his man on the right side, sent in a cross, and found Thomas Kanouna, who redirected the ball into the net for the team's fourth goal. In the 62nd minute, Leonardo Vitali scored in his second straight game after volleying the ball into the net from a pass from Callum Johnson, making it 5-1. Atario Brown would score his second goal of the game in the 69th minute, with an assist from Noah Searl, to make it 6-1. Adam Baldwin would make it 7-1 in th 73rd minute, when he scored, with an assist from Callum Johnson, with the game's final goal.
Austin Freemire made 3 saves en route to his sixth win of the season. Cleary will look to keep it going on Wednesday, October 15, when they host WHAC power Indiana Tech at Lake Trust Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM.
