Men's Soccer Wraps Up Non-Conference Play With Routine Win Over Calumet
(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar men's soccer game was in action for their final tune-up before WHAC play starts, and made an easy go of the visiting Calumet College of St. Joseph Crimson Wave Wednesday evening at Lake Trust Stadium.
The Cougars had more of the possession and therefore the chances in the first half, but it would take fifteen minutes to break through and score the game's opening goal. Callum Johnson was freed up down the left hand side and fired a powerful shot on target, forcing a save from the Crimson Wave goalkeeper. The keeper was unable to collect the ball, and it fell directly to Miguel Andriano Castillo, who scored his fifth goal in the past four games. Though Cleary still maintained almost all of the possession in the half, the Cougars were not clinical enough to extend their lead, and the Cougars led 1-0 at the break.
The second half saw the Cougars clean up their play, as the team would explode for six goals in the final 45 minutes. A Benji Sulcas goal, with an assist from Noah Searl, made the score 2-0 in the 62nd minute. One minute later, Adam Baldwin joined the fun, after Callum Johnson assisted his second goal of the afternoon to make the score 3-0. In the 70th minute, Noah Searl scored a goal, with an assist from Adam Baldwin, and three minutes later, Thomas Kanouna scored with an assist from Jack Heald to extend Cleary's lead to 5-0. Noah Searl scored his brace with another Jack Heald assist in the 77th minute. Cleary's final goal came in the 81st minute when Luca Taylor sent in a cross to Dillon Croft, who flicked it into the net, making the score 7-0.
Austin Freemire earned the win in goal to improve to 3-1, but did not get called upon to make any saves in the game. Six different Cougars put the ball into the back of the net. Cleary outshot the Crimson Wave 44-1 in the contest, with 18 of those shots going on target. Each team committed 9 fouls, while the Cougars held an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Cleary head into WHAC play with a 6-1 record. The Cougars will open WHAC action on Saturday, September 20, when they travel to Grand Rapids to take on the Cornerstone Golden Eagles. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
