(Howell, MI)-- Wednesday evening saw two unbeaten teams meet at Lake Trust Stadium, but the Cleary Cougar men's soccer team would be the ones to suffer defeat for the first time this season.
Both Briton goals came in the first half, and capitalized on Cougar mistakes. In the 30th minute, an errant header by the Cougar backline allowed the ball to get behind the defense, where an Albion player won the foot race to the ball and beat goalkeeper Austin Freemire to make the score 1-0 in favor of the visitors. In less than a minute later, Albion would force a turnover by Cleary, and struck on the counter attack to make the score 2-0. That score would hold through the rest of the half.
Cleary would come out urgent in the second half, but could not get the ball into the net to narrow the gap between the two teams, as Albion held on to win by a 2-0 score line.
Austin Freemire would suffer the loss in goal, as he made 2 saves on 4 shots faced. Albion outshot Cleary 14-13 in the game, and held a 4-1 advantage on shots on target. Cleary committed 18 fouls to Albion's 13 in the game.
The loss drops Cleary's record to 4-1 on the season. The Cougars will look to rebound on Saturday, September 13, when they host the Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars at Lake Trust Stadium. The game is set to begin at 6:00 PM.
