(Livonia, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar men's basketball ran into one of the hotter teams in the WHAC Wednesday evening, and the host Madonna Crusaders continued their run of form, handing the Cougars a 88-61 defeat.
Madonna made their first five field goal attempts to dig Cleary into a 14-4 hole. A Tim Kewley dunk would excite the Cougars, making the score 21-8, but the Crusaders remained hot from the field and built a twenty point lead by the halfway mark of the first half. A Bennie Crenshaw Jr. jumper before the break would send the Cougars into halftime trailing 45-23.
The second half saw the Crusaders pick up where they left off in the first, building their largest lead of the game with 7:53 to play. Cleary would start to make some threes late, as Jaylen Cole-Williams and Bennie Crenshaw Jr. hit back-to-back triples. Justin Odoms and Levi McKenzie would do the same to cut the deficit to twenty-four points with under two minutes to go, but Madonna would not relinquish their lead and won 88-61.
Bennie Crenshaw Jr. led CU with 15 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds. Jaylen Cole-Williams added 14 points and 2 steals.
Cleary drops to 3-12 overall, 2-7 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be at home on Saturday, January 18, when they welcome the Aquinas College Saints to Gannon Gymnasium.
