(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar baseball team earned a split in dramatic fashion against the visiting Lawrence Tech Blue Devils Sunday afternoon at Lake Trust Stadium.
In Game 1: Aaron Dyke got on with a single to center field. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, Jeremy VanOosterum drew a walk to put runners at the corners. VanOosterum would steal second, and savvy baserunning by Dyke would allow him to score the game's first run. After Kendall Flaugher drew a walk, Colton Fountain hit a double to right field that scored VanOosterum and Flaugher to give Cleary a 3-0 lead. The Blue Devils got one back in the top of the 3rd, and another in the top of the 4th to make the score 3-2. They would tie the game in the 6th, and took the lead in the top of the 7th of the scheduled 7-inning game. Down to their final three outs, Anthony Lacle drew a leadoff walk, and Ryan Kadoguchi and Aaron Dyke were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Spencer Jamieson drew a bases loaded walk to score Lacle and tie the game back at 4-4. After a Cougar strikeout, Kendall Flaugher played the hero, hitting a walk-off RBI single over the second baseman to score Kadoguchi and give the Cougars a 5-4 win.
Here is Kendall Flaugher's walk-off hit:
Starting pitcher Garrett Larner threw 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 7 in a no-decision. Austin Prahl earned his first victory of the season in relief. Colton Fountain led the offense with a 2/3 day and 2 RBI. Ryan Kadoguchi, Aaron Dyke, and Kendall Flaugher each added a hit.
In Game 2: Game 2 was all Blue Devils as they jumped on Cleary, scoring 11 runs through the first 3 innings. Cleary would get on the board in the bottom of the 6th, after Gabriel Clark led off the inning with a triple. Two batters later, Kyle Miazgowicz singled to left to score Clark and the Cougars' only run of the game. The game would be called after 7 innings played, and the final score would be 11-1.
Jeremy Fuchs suffered the loss pitching, allowing 8 runs (6 earned) in 1.2 innings pitched. Gavin Nelson and Trey Ridgway each pitched 2 innings of shutout baseball. Anthony Lacle, Aaron Dyke, Kendall Flaugher, Gabriel Clark, and Kyle Miazgowicz each had one hit for the Cougars.
Cleary is now 17-11, 5-3 in WHAC play. They will take on the UNOH Racers next Saturday, April 9, at Lake Trust Stadium in a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
Notes: Aaron Dyke now has a 7-game hit streak, after getting a hit in both games yesterday and today. Kendall Flaugher now has a 6-game hit streak, and today's walk-off hit was the second such walk-off for Cleary this season.
