Cougars Earn Sweep Over Midway in Kentucky
(Midway, KY)-- The Cleary Cougars baseball team made the trip to Midway, Kentucky today and played a double-header with the Midway College Eagles, earing a two-game sweep along the way.
In Game 1: Ryan Kadoguchi hit a double to center, and Anthony Lacle followed that up with a single to advance Kadoguchi to third base to bring up Jeremy VanOosterum who promptly singled home Kadoguchi to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. Three batters later, Kyle Miazgowicz singled to right to score Lacle and Cleary had a 2-0 lead. An Eagle run in the bottom half of the inning narrowed the lead to 2-1. In the second inning, Jesnel Soto hit a one out single, and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Ryan Kadoguchi brought Soto home on a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead. The Eagles would respond, tying the game in the bottom half of the inning, and ending starting pitcher Jeremy Fuchs' day. In the top of the fourth inning, Derek Zavala doubled to right center with one out. Two batters later, Anthony Lacle hit a single to center that would score Zavala, and give the Cougars all the runs they would need, as they went on to win 4-3.
Hunter Weber earned the victory in relief, pitching 2 innings and allowing 0 runs. Derek Zavala went 3/4 with 1 run scored, while Anthony Lacle went 2/4 with 1 R and 1 RBi, while Kyle Miazgowicz went 2/3 with 1 RBI.
In Game 2: Where game 1 was a lower scoring affair, game 2 was filled with action. After neither team scored in the first inning, Cleary would strike first in the second inning when Billy Flohr led off the inning with a home run. Two batters later, Kyle Miazgowicz singled, and was brought around to score after Jesnel Soto doubled to right field to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Midway would answer with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 2-1. Cleary would explode for five runs in the top of the third, which included three RBI doubles by Jeremy VanOosterum, Billy Flohr, and Kyle Miazgowicz. Jesnel Soto and Derek Zavala would each add RBI in the inning to give the Cougars a 7-1 lead. Midway would immediately strike back in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs to take the lead at 8-7. Cleary would tie the game in the top of the fourth, when Aaron Dyke would score after Kyle Miazgowicz reached on an error to make the score 8-8. Cleary would take the lead for good in the top of the fifth, as they scored four more runs, starting with a Jesnel Soto lead-off home run. Aaron Dyke would add an RBI single, and Billy Flohr an RBI sacrifice fly in the inning. Midway would score their final run in the bottom of the fifth, while Cleary exploded for another four runs in the top of the sixth to secure their victory. Aaron Dyke hit a 2 RBI single, and Billy Flohr added another RBI single in the inning.
Gavin Nelson would earn the victory in relief, pitching 2 innings, and allowing 1 run on 3 hits. Billy Flohr had a day at the plate, going 3/4 with 4 RBI and 1 home run. Jesnel Soto went 2/3 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, while Aaron Dyke went 3/4 with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored.
Cleary improves to 11-8 on the season, and will be back in action on Tuesday, March 15, when they host the Alma College Scotts in a single game. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM at Lake Trust Stadium.
