(Fort Wayne, IN)-- The Cleary Cougar hockey team had their chances early, but were unable to capitalize, opening the door for the host Indiana Tech Warriors Saturday afternoon in Ft. Wayne.
After playing a near perfect opening period, Indiana Tech would get on the board when they took advantage of a rebound off of goalie Nick Schittenhelm to make it 1-0 with just 13 seconds left in the first period.
The lead would grow to 4-0 in the second period, when the Warriors added a trio of goals, all coming in the first half of the second. Cleary would settle down some, but were still unable to break through Indiana Tech's Ty Barnhill.
In the third, Cleary would get some life, when Zach Eakes scored his second goal of the series, with assists from Wes Smith and Ben Gledhow, to narrow the gap. Unfortunately for Cleary, the Warriors would answer, and penalties would derail any chance of a comeback for the Cougars, as the game would end 8-1.
Nick Schittenhelm made his first career start, and made 43 saves on 51 shots faced.
Cleary drops to 10-16 overall, 6-10 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action next Friday and Saturday with a weekend series against the Concordia Cardinals. The Cougars will host CUAA on Saturday, January 13, at 5:30 PM at 140 Ice Den.
