(June 17, 2017 - Howell, Mich.) -- The Cleary University Cougars earned their first United States Collegiate Athletic Association's (USCAA) Director's Cup. The coveted award was presented to Cleary University's Athletic Director Ward Mullens at the 2017 USCAA National Convention in Norfolk, Virginia.

The Director's Cup is awarded annually to the USCAA athletic program that achieves the most cumulative success across athletic program during the academic year. Standings for the award are based on a point system and algorithm, with points awarded to each institution based on the number of sports offered and results from USCAA National Championship events.

"This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our coaches to be acknowledged for our performance out of nearly 90 other schools across the country," said Mullens. "It is great to be acknowledged at the national level, but one of the things I am most proud of is that Cleary University had more All-Americans than any other school in the USCAA this year. I am proud that our students shine in the classroom and on the field of play," he added.

Cleary University has approximately 180 student athletes and offers 14 varsity sports and one club sport within its athletic department. Cleary University's Athletic Department achieved a variety of noteworthy accomplishments in the 2016-2017 season in securing the Director's Cup, including:

  • National Championship for women's cross country
  • National Championship runner-up in women's softball
  • Third place national finish for men's cross country
  • Third place national finish for men's baseball
  • Third place national finish for men's golf
  • Men and women's track and field placed in the national invitational

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) approved Cleary University as one of seven new members, effective Aug. 1, 2017. Cleary will continue competition in the USCAA for the 2017-2018 academic year in order to provide its student-athletes the opportunity to participate in postseason competition.
