(June 15, 2017 - Howell, Mich.) -- After signing her name on the dotted line, per se, Kara Kiefer became the first official member of the new Cleary University competitive dance squad.

Kiefer, a 2016 graduate of Howell High School, has been a student at Michelle's Academy of Dance in Brighton, where Cleary coach Kathy King serves as an instructor.

"It's exciting to be making history by signing Kara," King said. "To be able to sign our first official recruit, and someone I know is such a phenomenal dancer, is truly a remarkable event in the program's history and hopefully Cleary athletics."

Kiefer was a member of the Highlander dance team for three years and was a member of the squad's second place finish in the state her junior season. Prior to joining the dance team, Kiefer was a member of the Howell gymnastics squad her freshman season.

"I wanted to go into business," Kiefer said. "But knowing Coach King so well and having the opportunity to continue my dance career made Cleary the easy choice for me."

Kiefer, a Health Care Management major, will look to use her degree to one day be a Chief Operating Officer. In the time being, she will focus on leading the fledging Cougar squad.

Kiefer has been involved in competitive dance for over 15 years and during her time with Maria's School of Dance she earned a scholarship to the prestigious Idea Seminar in Los Angeles where she was certified as an assistant dance teacher. During her dance career, Kiefer has been the recipient of numerous First Place Category and Overall awards.
